FROM THE PRINCIPAL’ S DESK

We all are acutely aware of the economy and the impact it is having on the job market and our standard of living. Although there has been a slight drop in the need for engineers the demand is still much higher than the supply. The demand has declined from 114,000 engineers of all types to enter the job market each year to 111,000. The colleges of engineering are still putting out only 64,000+ engineers per year. Depending upon the type of engineer the demand has not decreased. Medical fields are the only fields topping engineering. The need for engineers will not decrease and the supply needs to keep up. Engineering is a solid field to enter and preparing for the field of engineering begins with a student’s freshmen year. Lake View is affiliated with thirty-four colleges of engineering with LakeView’s affiliation with Project Lead The Way, a nationally recognized pre-engineering curriculum accepted for credit by the thirty-four colleges of engineering. Engineering is a very rewarding field to enter and the opportunities are ripe for students who apply her/his talents and skills. The field of engineering for a female is every greater than that of a male engineer. If you are talented in mathematics and science maybe you need to check out an engineering program at LakeView.

The fields of Automated Manufacturing System and Information Technology Systems is still strong on a national basis. When the recovery occurs these two fields will have demand far outstrip supply. An associate’s degree will take you a long way in either of these two fields. The wage prospects and mobility to move around the country and be gainfully employed in these two fields is strong in some parts of the country at present and will be at a high pitch when the economy gets back to a growth economy. These may not be the fields you wish to pursue but if they are you should be handsomely rewarded for your efforts. Take your education at LakeView serious and apply your talents, you will find that your high school career will pay off in a life time skill.

From the liaison officer:

As the school year winds down and we all look to summer, here are some importanWe are off to a great year at Lakeview and your teens are making that possible. Please take some time to review the following rules with them as these have become problem areas for our students.

  • Backpacks and jackets are not allowed in class.
  • Backpacks may be brought into class if they are see-through or mesh.
  • Backpacks and jackets can be brought to school, but then need to remain in their lockers.
  • Computer misuse is dealt with severely. This school is so computer reliant, that we have adopted a zero tolerance policy on computer misuse. If your teen abuses the computers in ANY way, he/she could be sent back to their home school permanently. Going to unapproved web sites, downloading unauthorized material, playing video games, are just a few things that could get your teen in big trouble.
  • The use of audio electronics is forbidden in class. I-pods, MP-3’s, etc. can only be listened to in the commons or outside during break time and lunch.
  • Cell phones need to be turned off and placed in their lockers during class time. Students may use cell phones outside during morning break and lunch.

If you as parents ever have any questions, please feel free to call me during the school day at 359-8155. I am eager to talk to any of you than have a comment/concern or have a question. I am looking forward to another great year at Lakeview and I hope we can count on your support. Thank you,

School Resource Officer,

Paul Marik, #149 PPPD.

ATTENDANCE POLICY AND PROCEDURES

All students are required to be in attendance daily and when they are absent the following procedure MUST be followed. Parents must call the day of the absence stating the students name and the reason for the absence or send a note with student upon their return. Truant students who have not been excused will receive a phone call at the end of the day. After five unexcused absences, students will receive an Initial Truancy Letter that requires the parent to contact the principal to make arrangements to correct the truancy situations and work with the staff to help the student be in attendance daily.

  • Please contact the school office the day of the absence at 359-8155. If a student is tardy to school, please call ahead of time and state the reason for the tardiness and the student's name. Unexcused tardiness will result in break detention (3 or more). Repeated offenses of unacceptable excuses will be noted as an unexcused tardiness. Please see your child's Student Planner for School Board Policies regarding attendance.

PARENTS NEED TO HELP!!!

The costs of higher education are expensive and virtually all students need to go on to higher education to help secure her/his future. There are numerous sources of financial assistance to help students and their families with the costs of higher education. Securing these monies will require parents and guardians to get involved and help their student secure financial assistance. PARENTS AND GUARDIANS, IF YOU WANT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE YOU MUST GET INVOLVED NOW! YOU MUST HELP YOUR DAUGHTER OR SON MAKE APPLICATIONS, WRITE LETTERS, SECURE REFERENCES, AND FILE PAPER-WORK AND APPLICATIONS ON TIME! Mrs. Mulligan (359-8155) is an excellent source of information to get you started. Any Senior going onto higher education needs to be actively involved now in making applications to colleges and universities and making applications for grants, scholarships, and loans to attend school next school year. If you are not actively involved in this process by early November you are LATE. Parents and guardians your daughter/son needs your active involvement; they can not do this alone.

JUNIOR & SENIOR PASSES

Junior and senior passes have been issued to all students who received all grades higher than 70% for last quarter and had no office referrals. The Senior Pass allows those students to have an open campus for lunch, meaning they are allowed to leave the building and get lunch elsewhere. Furthermore, they are allowed to leave for our 25 minute morning break time. Junior passes are ONLY for lunch and students need to have a parent sign a permission slip in order to obtain this privilege. If any student returns late or gets in trouble while gone, their pass will be revoked either permanently or for a specified period of time based on the violation. This privilege extends from quarter to quarter. This means that to earn the privilege for quarter 3 they need to maintain 70% academically and no office referrals from quarter 2, and so on.
